Galvanic and impressed current systems that extend the service life of reinforced concrete

Surface applied cathodic protection has been an effective option in the field of corrosion mitigation for decades, we will explore this and other new technologies that have recently come to market. This webinar will discuss how surface applied systems can be used to extend the service life of existing concrete bridge substructures in corrosive environments.

Shayan Yazdani

Service life extension of concrete bridges using the targeted cathodic protection technique.

Corrosion potential surveys have long been an effective non-destructive method of quantifying corrosion risk and locating “hot spots” in concrete structures before repairs are required.  High corrosion risk areas can be proactively targeted using embedded galvanic anodes to halt corrosion before the active corrosion causes concrete failure and a need for repair.  This webinar will discuss this proactive approach in detail and introduce an innovative “two-phase” anode technology combining the benefits of both impressed current and galvanic protection in a single unit.

Jan 17, 2024 | 2:00 - 3:00PM (EST)  |  Galvanic Encasements & Jacket Systems
Jason Chodachek
Vector Corrosion Technologies

Galvanic encasement repairs and cathodic protection jackets for abutments, columns, and piles.

Accelerated bridge construction has gained prominence in recent years as an economical way to breathe new life into bridge structures long past their expected service life.  The challenge is what to do with substructure elements that are often in as bad shape as the superstructure being replaced.  An effective substructure preservation strategy is needed to ensure the expected service of the new substructure matches the expected service life of the existing substructure elements such as the abutments, beams and piers.  This webinar will discuss the use of galvanic encasements as an elegant solution to service life extension for substructures and their proven track record.

Matt Miltenberger

Impressed current cathodic protection, chloride extraction, and re-alkalization for concrete bridges

Impressed current cathodic protection (ICCP) systems have successfully been used to protect embedded reinforcing steel from corrosion in bridge structures since the early 1970s.  Since then the field has evolved with respect to new innovations in material science and practitioners have learned many lessons as it relates to the design, installation, and maintenance of these systems. This webinar will discuss the history of ICCP systems, modern approaches to design and current applications on bridge structures.

Effective solutions for long lasting concrete repairs

Electrochemical corrosion mitigation techniques were first applied to bridges in the early 1970s to mitigate or arrest corrosion of reinforcing steel.  The field has innovated, and technology has evolved since those early days. The first discrete galvanic anodes were installed in concrete repairs on the substructure of the Leicester Bridge in the UK in 1999.  The performance of these anodes has been monitored for 20+ years.  This webinar will discuss the development and long-term performance of discrete galvanic anodes on bridge structures in addition to the typical applications such as concrete repairs, joint repairs and bridge widening.

Comprehensive evaluation techniques for detailed concrete and corrosion analysis

Corrosion of the reinforcing steel is the #1 cause of concrete failure on bridge structures.  Before corrosion can be mitigated or brought to a halt, we must understand the underlying cause and quantify the magnitude and extent of corrosion risk.  There are many destructive and non-destructive test methods that are effective in assessing corrosion risk.  No one method will provide a complete assessment, but in combination can provide a holistic view of the structure’s health.  This webinar will compare and contrast the various methods available today
