Jul 14, 2021  |  Culvert Repair Using Geopolymer Mortars
Garth Fallis, P.Eng.
Vector Construction

Description: Our modern world is full of buried pipes that ensure water and other liquids safely end up where they are intended to go.  Many of these pipes are have reached or are close to the end of their original design life and replacement can be disruptive and costly.  The field of trenchless culvert/pipe rehabilitation has been growing steadily for decades to address this new challenge.  This webinar will outline the common trenchless options owners and engineers have at their disposal to extend the service life of existing pipes and will explore one specific spray applied liner option with a promising class of materials called geopolymers.

May 12, 2021  |  Electrochemical Treatments to Extend the life of Corroding Substructures
David Whitmore, P.Eng.
Vector Corrosion Technologies

Description: Electrochemical Chloride Extraction and Re-Alkalization are two temporary treatments to address the underlying cause of corrosion in reinforce concrete bridge structures.  Both of these techniques were pioneered in Norway in the late 1980s.  This webinar will discuss the history and development of both electrochemical treatments and how they can be effectively employed to halt corrosion and reset the clock on actively corroding structures.

Apr 14, 2021  |  Impressed Current Cathodic Protection for Reinforced Concrete
Matt Miltenberger, P.E.
VCS Inc.

Description: Impressed current cathodic protection (ICCP) systems have successfully been used to protect embedded reinforcing steel from corrosion in bridge structures since the early 1970’s.  Since then the field has evolved with respect to new innovations in material science and practitioners have learned many lessons as it relates to the design, installation, and maintenance of these systems. This webinar will discuss the history of ICCP systems, modern approaches to design and current applications on bridge structures.

Mar 10, 2021  |  Evaluating As-Built Conditions with Non-Destructive Testing
Bill Horne, P.E.
NDT Corporation

Description: Nondestructive Testing (NDT) as it relates to bridge preservation is a set of tools commonly used to evaluate the health and capacity of an existing structure.  NDT methods measure changes in electromagnetic, infrared or sonic data to assess a structure’s condition.  This webinar will discuss some of these technologies and their applications in developing load ratings and assessing the condition of piles, foundations and other structural elements.

Feb 10, 2021  |  Mitigating Crevice Corrosion and Pack Rust on Steel Structures
Peter McCloskey
Vector Corrosion Technologies

Description: Corrosion of atmospherically exposed structural steel is a common problem on bridges. This problem is exacerbated when it comes to crevice corrosion due to the chemical dissimilarity inside the crevice as compared to outside the crevice causing a concentration cell to initiate.  Aggressive localized corrosion and rapid metal loss can occur in these crevices generating significant pack rust.  This webinar will discuss a innovative material used to arrest crevice corrosion by neutralizing acid, displacing moisture and scavenging oxygen.  This HRCSA (High Ratio Co- Polymerized Calcium Sulfonate) anti corrosion system is also effective in zone or global protection of atmospherically exposed structural steel.

Jan 13, 2021  |  Evaluation and Protection of Bonded Post-Tension Tendons
David Whitmore, P.Eng.
Vector Corrosion Technologies

Description: Despite their widespread use in segmental bridges and other post-tensioned structures, evaluating the in-situ condition of grouted post-tensioned tendons inside a sealed duct can be challenging.  If a grout defect or void is discovered within the sealed duct that could lead to corrosion of the tendon, what can be done to mitigate corrosion and extend the service life of the structure. This webinar will discuss non-destructive methods of evaluating grout condition and detecting voids or soft grout within sealed ducts as well as cover the history and development of an innovative post-tension impregnation process that can effectively protect the tendon from future corrosion.

Dec 9, 2020  |  Targeted Proactive Corrosion Protection for Bridges with Embedded Galvanic Anodes
David Simpson, Icorr Level IV Senior Cathodic Protection Engineer
Vector Corrosion Technologies

Description: Corrosion potential surveys have long been an effective non-destructive method of quantifying corrosion risk and locating “hot spots” in concrete structures before repairs are required.  High corrosion risk areas can be proactively targeted using embedded galvanic anodes to halt corrosion before the active corrosion causes concrete failure and a need for repair.  This webinar will discuss this proactive approach in detail and introduce an innovative “two-phase” anode technology combining the benefits of both impressed current and galvanic protection in a single unit.

Nov 11, 2020  |  Pile Protection for Coastal Bridges
Jason Chodachek
Vector Corrosion Technologies

Description: Marine environments are among the most corrosive exposure conditions for reinforced concrete or steel structures.  Tidal action and salt water splashing on piles creates ideal conditions for corrosion and the effects can wreak havoc on marine structures of all kinds.  While the marine environment presents significant challenges for service life, there are proven methods of extending the life of both concrete and steel piles in fresh, brackish and even salt water.  This webinar will compare the various marine pile protection options available today and explore methods of evaluating and protecting steel sheet piles.

Oct 14, 2020  |  Repair and Protection of Severely Corroded Bridge Substructures with Galvanic Encasements
Chris Ball
Vector Corrosion Technologies

Description: Accelerated bridge construction has gained prominence in recent years as a economical way to breathe new life into bridge structures long past their expected service life.  The challenge is what to do with substructure elements that are often in as bad shape as the superstructure being replaced.  An effective substructure preservation strategy is needed to ensure the expected service of the new substructure matches the expected service life of the existing substructure elements such as the abutments, beams and piers.  This webinar will discuss the use of galvanic encasements as an elegant solution to service life extension for substructures and their proven track record.

Sep 9, 2020  |  Corrosion Protection and Bridge Concrete Repairs
Dr. George Sergi, CEng, BSc, MSc, PhD, FICorr, FIMMM, BS EN ISO 15257:2017 Level-4 CP Specialist
Vector Corrosion Technologies

Description: Electrochemical corrosion mitigation techniques were first applied to bridges in the early 1970s to mitigate or arrest corrosion of the reinforcing steel.  The field has innovated and the technology has evolved since those early days. The first discrete galvanic anodes were installed in concrete repairs on the substructure of the Leicester Bridge in the UK in 1999.  The performance of these anodes has been monitored for 20+ years.  This webinar will discuss the development and long-term performance of discrete galvanic anodes on bridge structures in addition to the typical applications such as concrete repairs, joint repairs and bridge widenings.

Aug 12, 2020  |  Corrosion Assessments for Concrete Bridge Elements
Brian Pailes, P.E, Ph.D., NACE CP Specialist
VCS Inc.

Description: Corrosion of the reinforcing steel is the #1 cause of concrete failure on bridge structures.  Before corrosion can be mitigated or brought to a halt, we must understand the underlying cause and quantify the magnitude and extent of corrosion risk.  There are many destructive and non-destructive test methods that are effective in assessing corrosion risk.  No one method will provide a complete assessment, but in combination can provide a holistic view of the structure’s health.  This webinar will compare and contrast the various methods available today.
